Our guest in March for our special free public meeting is professor Jan Lin from Occidental College. Lin has observed Eagle Rocks revitalization efforts and will place them in context with overall trends in Northeast Los Angeles.

“Lin explores the promises and conflicts faced by public figures, artists, and leaders of Northeast Los Angeles as they enliven and defend their neighborhoods. Focusing especially on the cultural scene of Northeast Los Angeles, Lin shows how these gentrifying communities help satisfy a white middle-class consumer demand for authentic experiences of “living on the edge and a spirit of cultural rebellion.”

The fire blew in from Glendale and soon the whole ridge was burning. Fire companies converged to defend homes close to the hills. On March 19, 1964, nine homes were completely destroyed and seven heavily damaged.

We will show newly-acquired footage of this event and Joe Friezer’s prize-winning photos for the Eagle Rock Sentinel. We will explore the recurring advent of wind-driven brush fires in our hills, their causes, and the efforts to prevent them.. The Eagle Rock Valley Historical Society welcomes the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Digitizing History

Join David Dellinger, our new president, and Anne Mar, Assistant College Archivist/Metadata Specialist at Occidental College, who will discuss digitization standards, file formats, resolution, naming conventions, scanner and storage techniques.
